THE VOCABULARY OF THE INDUS LANGUAGE

The vocabulary of the language of the extant indus texts consists of 33 consonants with 14 vowels, i.e.,462 monosyllabic words. This was later supplemented by the ligatures, consisting of 33 into 33 consonants with 14 vowels, amounting to more than 15000 monosyllabic words. This is, however, the competence aspect of the language at the isolating stage. In performance, it is restricted to just 419 monosyllabic words as listed by Mahadevan.

A DICTIONARY OF THE INDUS SIGNS

The following is the dictionary of the Indus signs in the syllabic order of the Mahesvara-sutras. The signs are numbered according to Mahadevan's sign-list.

In transcribing the Sanskrit words, the capital letters are cerebrals, R being the vocalic r, and, if vowels they are long, A like a in Market, I like ee in seen, U like u in rule. Besides, H is Visarga and M is Anusvara. Initially, H is voiceless h.

The sign which is marked as ? is doubtful as to its value.
